The top Liberal leadership candidates seem to be developing their very own signature poses.
Michael Ignatieff has the hand-on-the-hip stance – very New York, very metrosexual. It says, “I am confident in both my sexuality and my ability to bomb a country if I had to in that Dr. Evil kinda way. There was some buzz that his people have told him to avoid this pose, so you may not see it as often. Still, this is the only potential Liberal leader who could get away with a rose on the lapel and is ready to do the “Time Warp at a moment’s notice.
Bob Rae has the arms-crossed thing happening. He did this a lot at the Liberal leadership debate in Quebec City back in September. The crossed arms say “I am so f***ing bored – which to me implies pure honesty. Those leadership debates have been such a snorefest, so it’s great to see a politician “think of England and just do his duty and deliver his answers in a passionate way. Apparently some media analyst who reviews body language said Rae should stop this pose. That’s like asking RuPaul to stop sashaying. You have to keep it real.
Then there’s Gerard Kennedy, who keeps it real and who has the sweet hand-on-the-chest pose. He tends to do it when he’s one-on-one with people. It’s actually really sincere and shows this is a man who cares about a lot of things. I noticed this a fair bit at his September BBQ in Toronto’s High Park. The park was packed with Liberal supporters and very happy homeless locals, who got in line for a free meal.

Stéphane Dion has a hand-coming-out-with-palm-down-and-about-to-raise thing he likes to do. It’s almost like the start of a Diana Ross “Stop in the Name of Love hand gesture, but falls short. It’s his “now wait just a minute pose. I have yet to grab a picture of it, but I’m working on it. Watch for it.
